SINGLED OUT: THE BATTLE OF MARSTON MOOR

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Perhaps the rarest (and most unlikely) of ELO 'B' sides is found on the 1972 US issue of their debut 7" single "10538 Overture" (United Artists #50914). Whereas the Roy Wood penned "First Movement (Jumping Biz)" was to be found on the reverse side of the UK edition (Harvest #HAR5053), the American release was surprisingly backed an alternative Wood composition: "The Battle Of Marston Moor (July 2nd 1644)".

The story of why ELO's first album was mistakenly entitled "No Answer" (#UAS-5573) in the US is well known by most fans of the band due to a unanswered phone call and misunderstood message but the hard to find US issue of "10538 Overture" also reveals something of the ongoing transition of The Move into The Electric Light Orchestra (as does "No Answer") with these hallowed words:

"Move Enterprises Ltd. Presents The Services Of THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCH."

Thereafter, it would be but a short period of time before Roy left his ELO brainchild in the capable hands of co-founders Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan. Fans and followers of ELO should never underestimate or forget the role of Roy Wood and The Move in the foundation of the band we know and still love here in Yours Truly 2016.

CAUGHT LIVE: THE STEVE GIBBONS BAND & QUILL

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The opportunity to go see Midlands legend Steve Gibbons (and band) and the mighty Quill share the same bill at The Prince Of Wales Theatre in nearby Cannock on Saturday night (26th November) proved much too tempting for elobeatlesforever (elobf) and Yours Truly KJS as they combined to deliver an evening of the highest musicianship in front of an enthusiastic audience.
First up on stage was Steve Gibbons with his top class band. Belying his 75 years, this particular rock 'n' roll maestro took those assembled on a journey through his own personal inspirations - the likes of Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and, of course, Bob Dylan - in a set that also included his own standards too. There was no "Tulane" on the night but that kind of didn't matter. I've had the opportunity to see Steve perform both solo and with SGB in the last week. If nothing else, it has been a timely re-education regarding another local musician (with such a longstanding legacy) who deserves much more recognition and plaudits than has been afforded him to date.

The Steve Gibbons Band performed: “Boppin' The Blues (Carl Perkins)” ~ “Hey Buddy” ~ "Chuck In My Car” ~ “The Memphis Flash” ~ “Trying To Get To You” (Elvis Presley) ~ “Don't Trade Me In” ~ “I Shall be Released” (Bob Dylan) ~ "Tupelo Mississippi Flash" (Jerry Reed) ~ “Mister Jones/Let There Be Love/Purple Haze
Quill debuted their new single "Ghosts Of Christmas" during the show ...
The short interval prepared us for the arrival of Joy Strachan-Brain and her reinvented Quill sextet, a merry band of minstrels if ever there were one! New song "Pretty Ribbons" was aired for the first time as was their forthcoming new single "Ghosts Of Christmas"  - watch out for an elobf feature on that soon! Alongside the newer tracks, which will form the backbone of their next studio album in 2017, Quill once again delivered some quite stunning covers in their set with “Can’t Find My Way Home”, "A Showman's Life" and their marvellous take on "The Whole Of The Moon" once again highlights. Jeff Lynne's "Telephone Line" has almost been given a new life by Joy's haunting vocal and remains a personal fave. And how can anyone not shed a tear with the first note of The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers" heralds "The End" of another memorable show. You catch Quill for a final time this year on Saturday 10th December when they join up with The Robbie Blunt Band at The Civic Hall in Stourport-on-Severn (see below).

Quill performed: “The Bells Of Rhymney” ~ "Pretty Ribbons" ~ "A Showman's Life" ~ “Black Dog Day” ~ “Telephone Line” ~ “Elephant In The Room” ~ “Can’t Find My Way Home” ~ “Say It Ain’t So” ~ "Gordon's Jig" ~ “The Whole Of The Moon” ~ Say Goodbye ~ The Celtic Experience: "Wild Mountain Thyme/England/Jerusalem" ~ Abbey Road Medley: "Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End” ~ Encore: "Ghosts Of Christmas"

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! #1,200: Esoteric Recordings (an imprint of Cherry Red Records), the people who brought you the rather nice expanded CD and vinyl editions of those four (4) studio albums by The Move (and the "Something Else" EP) earlier this year, are releasing a new expanded CD/DVD compilation on Friday 27th January 2017 entitled: "Magnetic Waves Of Sound: The Best Of The Move".

CD: (1) "Night Of Fear" (mono); (2) "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" (mono); (3) "Wave The Flag And Stop The Train" (mono); (4) "Kilroy Was Here" (mono); (5) "(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree" (mono); (6) "Walk Upon The Water" (mono); (7) "Flowers In The Rain" (mono); (8) "Fire Brigade" (mono); (9) "Wild Tiger Woman (mono); (10) "Blackberry Way" (mono); (11) "Curly" (mono); (12) "Hello Susie"; (13) "Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited"; (14) "Brontosaurus"; (15) "When Alice Comes Back To The Farm"; (16) "What?"; (17) "Ella James"; (18) "Tonight"; (19) "Chinatown"; (20) "California Man"; (21) "Do Ya"

The two (2) disc set features a 21 track CD that includes hit tracks from "Night Of Fear" all the way through to "California Man", some in mono and some in stereo. Quite possibly, it's the most complete overview of The Move's releases in single and EP format on a single disc, ticking many of the boxes for fans of both Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne. Coupled with the CD, is a DVD featuring twenty one (21) visual nuggets of The Move from BBC and German TV archives between 1967-70 including their legendary Colour Me Pop appearance and the ultra-rare promo video for "I Can Hear The Grass Grow".

"Magnetic Waves Of Sound: The Best Of The Move" will soon be listed by major retailers including amazon.co.uk but, if you can't wait, it can be pre-ordered now from Spin CD's (priced at £13.99) via this link thus: www.spincds.com/the-move/magnetic-waves-of-sound

REVIEW: BUBBLES [Morganisation]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Four light years have passed since 2012's "Across The Divide" and in that "Time", Dave Scott-Morgan has assembled his rather talented quintet Morganisation and taken them out on the road to rave reviews. Significantly, their debut studio album "Bubbles" is officially and digitally released today (Saturday 26th November).

"Bubbles" is a collection of ten (10) tunes including a stomping cover of the Buddy Holly classic "Well ... All Right" alongside nine original compositions which exhibit the influence of Bob Dylan in places with welcome nods to The Beatles and, of course, his old pal Jeff Lynne and ELO too. So named after the "various interludes which sort of bubble up between tracks" (as eloquently explained by Dave recently), "Bubbles" opens with the atmospheric layered vocals of "I'd Love To See You" before "On A Plane" - the most ELOesque of the songs on show here - arrives to grab your aural attention complete with additional guitar contribution of Tony Kelsey. The bluegrass flavoured "Black Dog Day" signposts a change of genre before a new version of the quirky "Mistress Caroline" (originally found on Dave's 2001 "Reel Two" album) makes its appearance, with former ELO bassist Martin Smith also guesting on guitar. The interestingly entitled "The Queen, The Prince And The Dish" is next, a song about HM The Queen, the passing of Prince and an old friend. The last four tracks have all been proof tested in Morganisation's recent live shows and all translate nicely into studio tracks. The crowd pleasing rocker "Knower" is followed the beautiful homage to wartime heroine Violette Szabo GC: "Gibraltar Farm". The anthemic "Are You Ready?" and finally the catchy "Big Brown Sky" close out this highly enjoyable outing which also serves as as a reminder (if it were needed) to the songwriting legacy of one Dave Scott-Morgan with a little help from wife Mandy, talented guitarist Alex Lowe, Alan Smith and Jack Rosa. My fave track has to be "On A Plane" and with an asking price of only £7, this album is a real steal! (10/10)

"Bubbles" by Morganisation comprises: "I'd Love To See You" [1:18] ~ "On A Plane" [3:56] ~ "Black Dog Day" [3:34] ~ "Mistress Caroline" [5:19] ~ "Well ... All Right" (Buddy Holly) [3:12] ~ "The Queen, The Prince And The Dish" [3:54] ~ "Knower" [4:11] ~ "Gibraltar Farm" [2:41] ~ "Are You Ready?" [3:20] ~ "Big Brown Sky" [3:47]
On a Wing and a Prayer: Morganisation are (l-r) Mandy & Dave Scott-Morgan, Alex Lowe, Jack Rosa, Alan Smith

JEFF LYNNE: AWARDS IN THE UNIVERSE

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The news that Jeff Lynne is one of five nominees for BBC Radio 2 Album Of The Year in the BBC Music Awards 2016 - to be held on Monday 12th December in London - is the latest in a series of music industry recognitions following on from the amazing success of "Alone In The Universe" by Jeff Lynne's ELO and the ensuing sold-out tour, watched by well over a quarter of a million fans in the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and the United States, including a headline Glastonbury appearance.

The BBC nomination follows the news that Jeff Lynne has also made the shortlist for Self-Producing Artist Of The Year in the 2017 Music Producers Guild Awards - to be held on Thursday 16th February in London. Jeff Lynne's ELO were also winners of the Band Of The Year at the Classic Rock Awards held in Tokyo, Japan on Friday 11th November.

Last (but not least), don't forget that ELO continue to strongly challenge in the race to win the 2017 nominee fan vote to become join the Rock & Rock Hall Of Fame inductees at the award ceremony, due to held in New York City during April next year. REVIEW: 21 TODAY ALBUM LAUNCH @ BIRMINGHAM 21/11/16

The face of J4T21: Julie Hambleton ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The Justice 4 The 21 album launch was held in The Foundry Rooms at The Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham yesterday (Monday 21st November). Although the 2CD album - newly released in aid of Acorns Childrens Hospice - was intended to the centre of attention, it was the dignified, heartfelt and emotional speeches of J4T21 campaigner Julie Hambleton, Project Coordinator Phil HattonLord Mayor of Birmingham Carl Rice and Birmingham City Council Leader John Clancy, the latter confirming that the twenty one (21) victims of the atrocity are to be awarded the posthumous freedom of the City of Birmingham, that ensured those assembled not only remembered the happenings of Thursday 21st November 1974, but also that they continue the journey towards a free, fair and unbiased official inquest into the events leading up to and after the tragedy.
Passionate speeches by Cllr. John Clancy, Phil Hatton and Mayor Carl Rice ...
Yes, the likes of Dave Scott-Morgan, Morganisation, Steve GibbonsRoy Wood, Jasper Carrott, Dave Pritchard, Roger 'Ollie' Spencer and Quill were there (plus not a few contributors and supporters) but, as "The Rain Came Down On Everything" outside, this particular afternoon was more about remembering the innocent and pushing on for justice than it was about the wonderful music on hand. Having said that, the renditions of "21 Today" by Morganisation and "Life is Life" by Joy Strachan-Brain and Abby Brant were so very poignant and touching.
Dave Scott-Morgan and Morganisation ...
The songs performed were: "21 Today"; "Benediction"; "Cut Across Shorty"; "Shanty Town Blues"; "Don't Think Twice"; "Knower"; "Handle With Care"; "On A Plane"; "Mission Impossible"; "Big Brown Sky"; "Rock 'n' Roll Is King" (Morganisation) + "Life Is Life" (Joy Strachan-Brain/Abby Brant (Quill) + "Wonderful World"; "No Spitting On The Bus"; "Big J.C."; "Hey Buddy"; "The Memphis Flash" (Steve Gibbons)
Abby Brant, Joy Strachan-Brain and Steve Gibbons ...
Yours Truly KJS is not a Brummie - I'm a Wulfrunian - but being there hopefully meant that not only can the citizens of Birmingham "Come Together" in support of this noble campaign, but also that their fellow Midlanders, folks from further afield and the worldwide fan bases of those Birmingham bands and musicians that we all know and love can also draw alongside too. elobeatlesforever (elobf) are proud to support Justice 4 The 21.

CHILDREN IN NEED: WIN TICKETS FOR INTIMATE ELO FUNDRAISER

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Five (5) lucky winners (and a friend each) will be able to see Jeff Lynne's ELO perform in front of just one hundred people at Chris Evans' Dine And Disco event next Summer, thanks to the text competition announced on the BBC Radio 2 DJ's Breakfast Show this morning in aid of the BBC Children In Need charity.
This somewhat intimate gig is scheduled for Saturday 17th June 2017, just seven (7) days before Jeff Lynne's ELO make their bow at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 24th June, confirming the tweet made by elobeatlesforever (elobf) @ Twitter back on 30th October (see above).

You can enter the competition by following the instructions and answering the above question by texting the word PARTY followed by the correct answer (A, B or C) to 84222. Each text entry costs £5 with between £2.49 and £3.75 donated to BBC Children In Need (depending on your mobile network). The competition runs up until 11:59AM on Thursday 17th November. Although the chances of winning are relatively slim numerically speaking, this is an opportunity to support a deserving charity and have a chance of seeing/hearing the ELO maestro up close and personal!

SJET12144: RECORD PRICE FOR ELO RARITY

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! As if to underline the apparent rarity of the 12" black vinyl edition of the Jeff Lynne penned ELO single "Shine A Little Love" b/w "Jungle" (Jet/CBS SJET12144), a copy was sold earlier this week for just shy of £200.

The 12" white vinyl edition of the lead single from "Discovery", which reached #6 in June 1979, is much more numerous (and easy to locate) than the black vinyl issue - a scenario usually the other way round. Regular visitors to elobeatlesforever (elobf) will know that Yours Truly KJS was fortunate enough to finally nab a copy from Denmark in October (for a significantly lower price) thus:

REMEMBERING LEONARD COHEN

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! 2016 has been remarkable in many ways, not least in the number of musical greats who have left us - including David Bowie, Prince and now Leonard Cohen - who passed away on Monday 7th November. On the face of it, there would appear to be very little to connect the poetic and lyrical genius of a man sometimes, if not unfairly, nicknamed called "The Poet Laureate of Misery" aside from the fact that he was latterly a Columbia Records label mate with Jeff Lynne's ELO.

But studious ELO fans of old know that the name of Leonard Cohen is firmly entrenched in ELO folklore thanks to the lyrics of a certain Jeff Lynne penned song nestled between "Nobody's Child" and the title track within ELO's classic 1974 symphonic masterpiece "Eldorado" due to the fact that the immortal words "Tunes that sounded like The Rolling Stones and Leonard Cohen" make up the the fourth line of "Illusions In G Major" (also the 'B' side for the "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" single; Warner Bros. #K16510).
We mourn the passing of another musical legend but at least fans of ELO will always be reminded of Leonard Cohen (and his musical/poetic legacy) just after "Nobody's Child" abruptly ends.

ROY WOOD: 69 (not 70) YEARS OLD TODAY!

Looking forward to Roy's 70th birthday ... in 2017!
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! For some strange reason in the last few years, there has been not a little "Confusion" as to the age of Dr. Roy Wood. Today (Tuesday 8th November) is the birthday of the The Move, ELO and Wizzard founder and to some folks earlier today, it was also Roy's 70th birthday too. But in prematurely celebrating Roy reaching his own three score years and ten, even Yours Truly KJS posted congratulatory messages for Roy on Twitter and Facebook before The Guardian issued a correction and Roy himself confirmed that he is just 69 years of age today by posting a photograph of his Driving Licence via the official Roy Wood Twitter page showing his birth year as 1947.

Roy Wood ... Have a bostin' 69th birthday!

Have a read of the elobeatlesforever (elobf) article from April 2014 chronicling the phenomenal UK chart career of a certain Roy Wood between 1966-1975 and/or you can find out where Roy Wood and his Rock 'n' Roll Band are playing live during 2016 and 2017 via these links thus:

RECOMMENDED: RED SHOES ALBUM #3 CROWDFUNDER CAMPAIGN

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Following on from their critically acclaimed first two albums "Ring Around The Land" (2010) and "All The Good Friends" (2012),  elobeatlesforever (elobf) featured artiste Red Shoes have launched a new Crowdfunder campaign, as of Saturday 5th November, with the noble goal of funding their third studio album by Friday 30th December 2016 - which just happens to also be Jeff Lynne's 69th birthday!

Red Shoes included a glorious folk tinged cover of Roy Wood's classic song "Blackberry Way" (The Move; #1; February 1969) on their second album "All The Good Friends" with a little help from Bev Bevan. Tony Kelsey (Quill; Bev Bevan's Move/Zing Band) is also a former member. At the time of writing, 14% of their goal has already been pledged with 54 days to go. Full details of this exciting project - which has an anticipated album release date of Spring 2017 - are detailed within their Crowdfunder campaign page via this link thus:

RECOMMENDED: OUTSIDE TIME [Old Future Crash]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Formed in 2006, Old Future Crash (OFC) are a hugely talented trio comprising ELO superfan Mauri Martinez, Pedro Lopez and lyricist Nancy Betancourt. The threesome, who released a three track 7" vinyl EP in 2008, have now finally released their debut CD album "Outside Time" alongside two impressive singles in "Rising" and, more recently, "People In The City". Heavily influenced by the music of Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra and judging by the quality of the aforementioned singles (listen to both tracks below), "Outside Time" is sure to appeal to the ELO fan base with a sound very much reminiscent of the later ELO studio albums "Time", "Secret Messages" and "Balance Of Power". Yours Truly KJS very much looks forward to reviewing "Outside Time" by Old Future Crash for elobeatlesforever (elobf) in the near future.

Old Future Crash are: Pedro Lopez, Mauri Martinez and Nancy Betancourt with a little help from their friends Arturo Aguilera, Paula Aguilera, Carlos Fernandez, Roque Esteban, Guille Leon, Pepe Esteban and Francis Palacios. You can find out more about Old Future Crash, their new album "Outside Time" plus singles "Rising" and "People In The City" via these links thus:

RECOMMENDED: EL ORIGINAL BREW [The Ancient Order Of Froth Blowers]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Earlier this year in February, elobeatlesforever (elobf) made mention in this article of a sequel in the making to "Carlsberg Special (Pianos Demolished Phone 021 373 4472)", the famed 'B' side to Wizzard's first hit single "Ball Park Incident" (EMI/Harvest HAR5062) - which reached #6 in January 1973. "EL Original Brew" (Pianos Reconstructed Phone 01242 517635) by The Ancient Order Of Froth Blowers is out soon and is once again written by former ELO and Wizzard member Bill Hunt, with the title being an apparent reference to a certain band. The double 'B' sided single - a world first - also features "The Kentish Town Song", written by Will Hunt (Bill's son), with an early ELOesque arrangement by Hamstall Ridware and Dr. C D Mille.

The Ancient Order Of Froth Blowers include in their ranks Bill Hunt, elobf recommended artiste The Sundae Club (Hamstall Ridware and Dr. C D Mille), Nick Pentelow (Wizzard/Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders), Hugh McDowell (Wizzard/ELO), Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff), Erika Nockalls and Skins Blithbury with George Shilling producing.

The single - sponsored by The Froth Blowers Brewing Co. of Erdington, Birmingham - will be released in full on Thursday 15th December as a download and a limited edition frothy ale coloured 7" single, some of which are available to buy signed by Bill Hunt and/or the full band. Yours Truly KJS was privileged to have a listen to "EL Original Brew" in a Frome car park last year and I can confirm that it will most certainly appeal to fans of ELO, Roy Wood and Wizzard.
