LETTERS FROM SPAIN: KELLY'S CAREER CONNECTIONS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Yours Truly KJS has owned a copy of the Spanish issue of Kelly Groucutt's 1982 solo single "Oh! Little Darling" b/w "Black Hearted Woman" [RCA #PB-6572] for many years. On the rear of the 7" picture sleeve is a summary of his career and an introduction to his then solo album. I thought that it would be interesting to attempt to translate the text in English, being as you can clearly see mentions of Sight 'n' SoundThe Idle Race, Roger Spencer [and the more familiar] within it thus:

KELLY GROUCUTT: FROM THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA TO SOLO DEBUT
"He belongs to that generation of great musicians born in the late forties [September 1945]. Kelly Groucutt formed his first band when he was fifteen. By then, Kelly was limited to being a singer. Two years later, he began playing guitar. At twenty, he was already an accomplished bassist, and it could be assumed that he would soon occupy a position among the elite of the most brilliant bassists. Indeed, that first bass, a Fender Precision 62, Groucutt still uses today. Curiously, Groucutt wrote that although he was left-handed, he always preferred to play guitar with his right hand. In 1972, he began working with Sight 'n' Sound, a good band of the time. One day, the Idle Race drummer, Roger Spencer, introduced Kelly to Jeff Lynne and in 1974, Jeff, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy invited him to join the Electric Light Orchestra. ELO and Kelly formed a long relationship. Kelly went on to be involved in the following albums: "Face The Music", "A New World Record", "Out Of The Blue", "Discovery", "Time" and many of their greatest hits. He also did the soundtrack of the movie "Xanadu". This is his debut as soloist and writer. This album presents definitely one of the best soloists of our time: Kelly Groucutt."
It's always worth revisiting your record collection. Who knows what you might rediscover? I hope that the above transliteration conveys the content and intent of the original biography. ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] often features Sight 'n' Sound, The Idle Race and, of course, the late great Kelly Groucutt

LOUIS CLARK: ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

Louis Clark: On the road to recovery! Photograph published by permission of Gloria Bentley Clark ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] is pleased to announce that Hooked On ClassicsELO, ELO Part II, The Orchestra and all round string maestro Louis Clark is now recovering well from his recent struggle with acute kidney failure. Lou's wife Gloria gave ELOBF permission to publish the above photograph earlier this evening.

"Great news today [22/02/15] on Lou's health. Lou's wife Gloria has said "We've been told by the doctors that they expect a full recovery for Lou with minimal damage if any and that it's nearly a miracle. We can hardly believe it. He's awake and so happy to see us". She thanks everyone for their prayers and good wishes." [source: www.theorchestra.net/news.html]

Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] wishes Louis a speedy recovery and looks forward to his return to performing and conducting with The Orchestra [former members of ELO & ELO Part II] soon.

REVIEW: MOTHERS CLUB REUNION 2015

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The Mothers Club Reunion 2015 event at St. Barnabas Church in Erdington, Birmingham held on Saturday 21st February was an astounding success as literally hundreds, if not thousands, of former Mothers Club concert goers, employees and appearing artistes gathered to remember and reminisce during the ten [10] hour duration of the exhibition.

A flying [and sadly foreshortened] visit by Yours Truly KJS was more than worth the twenty [20] mile drive as display after display showcased The Move, The Idle Race, ELO, The Uglys, Mike Sheridan & The Nightriders, The Diplomats, Pink Floyd, Tyrannosaurus Rex, The Rockin' Berries, Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group and not a few other much loved if not well known bands. Highlights for me were the articles on display celebrating and recalling the career of Carl Wayne following his untimely passing in 2004, chatting to organiser Dave Gordon [this was his very own labour of love] and finally getting to meet Dave and Fiona Pritchard, on the day before their Golden Wedding anniversary. The Mothers Club Reunion 2015 more than lived up to its promise ... and I loved it! [11/10]
The Move, The Idle Race and much of 'Brum Beat' featured prominently at the Mothers Club Reunion 2015 ...
Organiser David Gordon with KJS ...

'Brum Beat' and ELO connections were on display ...
The Move and The Idle Race were on the same bill in 1970 ...

August 1969: Dates at Alton Towers [10th] and Exeter [15th] for The Move!
A huge amount of credit and many thanx should be extended to David Gordon and the Mothers Reunion 2015 team for a fantastic event which was superbly organised. ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] very much looks forward to [hopefully] another event like this in 2016 so that folks who enjoy the music of ELOJeff LynneRoy WoodThe MoveThe Idle RaceThe Beatles [and related artistes] can also rediscover the rich musical history that is the heart of 'Brum Beat'.

RECOMMENDED: DRAWN TO THE BEAT [Alex Vann]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Drawn To The Beat is an exhibition of pencil, ink and watercolour drawings by Wolverhampton based artist and musician Alex Vann that Yours Truly KJS stumbled upon earlier today whilst partaking of Sunday lunch in nearby Shifnal with Pete Reynolds, an old friend of mine.
The exhibition runs from Sunday 1st March to Thursday 30th April at The Plough Inn, Shifnal in Shropshire and will feature many of Alex's original drawings and paintings. Alex will also be performing a live acoustic set at the formal launch event at 7:00PM on Tuesday 3rd March.

BEYOND THE SEA OF DREAMS

RIP Kelly Groucutt: Saturday 8th September 1945 to Thursday 19th February 2009
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Thursday 19th February 2015 marks the sixth anniversary of the tragic death of Kelly Groucutt back in 2009. I wrote this poem a while ago in anticipation of today, not only as a mark of respect but also as a token of thanks to a really nice chap:

~ "Beyond The Sea Of Dreams" ~

Two thousand, one hundred and ninety one days,
Three hundred and thirteen weeks,
Since our beloved Kelly G went away,
Beyond the Sea of Dreams.

Six sad years have passed,
All those friends, family and fans will never forget,
Your songs, your voice, your bass,
Time will not our memory away fret.

Six years,
Two thousand, one hundred and ninety one days,
Three hundred and thirteen weeks,
We hear your music and what you still say.

MY FATHER'S SON: AN IDLE RACE DISCOVERY

Early editions of this 1985 compilation LP contained a typographical error ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! After many years, I finally got around to visiting a record fair over at The Robin 2 in Bilston yesterday [Sunday 15th February]. It was perhaps a sign of the growing resurgence of vinyl that the event was packed with folks like me looking for the missing pieces in their respective collections. Yours Truly KJS was pleased to pick up a mint Canadian copy of ELO's "A New World Record" [#UA-LA679-G] and, quite unexpectedly, something else. A copy of "Light At The End Of The Road" - the 1985 compilation LP released on See For Miles Records [#SEE60] that covered a fair portion of the recording career of The Idle Race - and in fantastic condition too!

I posted a couple of pictures of my vinyl captures in the elobeatlesforever Facebook page whereupon Fiona Pritchard - the wife of Dave Pritchard - informed me that although the initial pressing of the LP cited Jeff Lynne as the writer for "My Father's Son", it was in fact a Dave Pritchard composition. Fiona advised me that See For Miles refused to recall the first pressings but corrected the error thereafter with later pressings. An expanded CD entitled "The Best Of The Idle Race featuring Jeff Lynne" was released somewhat later in 1990 [#SEECD60] which also correctly quoted Dave Pritchard as the author of the aforementioned track.
Dave Pritchard was later correctly cited as the composer of "My Father's Son" [Photo: Sir Jeff Cooper]
It just goes to show that being a collector of ELO and related artistes records is still as surprising and rewarding as ever. The next Robin Record & CD Fair is on Sunday 17th May.

PETE HAYCOCK'S ELO GUITAR LEGACY CONTINUES

Pete Haycock with his Gordy 1840 with ELO Part II and the MSO in 1991 ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Back in January, you may recall that ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] featured both the Sunburst Alpha and Blue Jordan guitars used by the late, great Pete Haycock during his tenure with ELO Part II between 1990-1992.

They were acquired by Geoff Burrows, who has now also gained possession of the ELO Part II co-founders legendary Gordy 1840 - a prototype Gordon Smith guitar, which was used not only during those ELO Part II studio sessions and concerts, but also during the famed "Night Of The Guitars" tour in 1988 and on Hans Zimmer's acclaimed OST for the movie "Thelma & Louise" in 1991. From a personal perspective, it really is great to see that all three [3] guitars are in good hands.

Geoff Burrows is presently seeking out new opportunities with a function or classic pop covers [including, of course, ELO] band after having left his previous outfit - as they became Before The Dawn [a very good Kate Bush tribute act] - and can be contacted via his Facebook page.

COMMENT: CHANNEL 4 COVERAGE OF 57TH GRAMMYS

The snubbing of Jeff Lynne's ELO by Channel 4 was even more baffling when you consider the above stats ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Perhaps it should not come as a complete surprise that a certain band - who initially struggled to gain recognition in their home country but then found commercial success in the United States - found history repeating itself last night [Monday 9th February] as both Channel 4 and its subsidiary channel 4Music both failed to include four [4] minutes of coverage of the amazing live TV performance of a resurgent Jeff Lynne's ELO [with a little assistance from current golden boy Ed Sheeran] at the 57th Grammy Awards in LA on Sunday night.
Two [2] programmes of four [4] hours length with an unbelievable assortment of multiple advertisement breaks left out what many of our American friends who saw the broadcast live on CBS unanimously stated was the highlight of the show. When you compare this with the professional and expansive coverage of the BBC of Jeff Lynne's appearance at BBC Children In Need Rocks in 2013 and, of course, that amazing Hyde Park spectacle in 2014, there really is no comparison.

Channel 4 [and by extension 4Music] please take note. This was an epic fail on your part as you missed a golden opportunity to excel. You disappointed a whole host of viewers who waited patiently hoping to see some footage of Jeff Lynne with Ed Sheeran and friends. Note that our friends in Ireland and France did see the aforementioned footage.

JEFF LYNNE'S ELO STEAL GRAMMY SPOTLIGHT

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! #850: Jeff Lynne's ELO stole the show at the 57th Grammy Awards ceremony at The Staples Center in LA last night [Sunday 8th February] with a four [4] minute electrifying medley of "Evil Woman" and [of course!] "Mr. Blue Sky", the latter with the able assistance of Ed Sheeran. The performance had the audience - and in particular Sir Paul McCartney, Taylor SwiftNicole Kidman and Beyonce - literally leaping out of their seats!
Even Sir Paul McCartney was up and out of his seat in appreciation ...
The show will be broadcast in the UK on Monday 9th February from 9:00PM until 11:30PM on 4Music [Sky channel #360; Freeview channel #18; Virgin Media channel #330]. Highlights will follow on Channel 4 [Sky channel #104; Freeview channel #4 [or #8 in Wales]; Virgin Media channel #104] from 11:35PM until 1:05AM and then one [1] hour later on Channel 4+1 [Sky channel #135; Freeview channel #13; Virgin Media channel #143] from 12:35AM until 2:05AM on Tuesday 10th February. Jeff Lynne's ELO last night were Richard Tandy, newcomer Tyra JulietteIain HornalMike StevensLee Pomeroy and Donavan Hepburn. Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! A nice photograph has been published in the last few hours via the Jeff Lynne Official Facebook page depicting a relaxed atmosphere as preparations for the 57th Grammy Awards ceremony at The Staples Center in Los Angeles later today [Sunday 8th February].

The photo shows the ELO co-founding maestro conducting Jeff Lynne's ELO who will be Richard Tandy [naturally!], newcomer Tyra Juliette, Iain Hornal, Mike Stevens and Lee Pomeroy with Phil Hatton looking on. Drummer Donavan Hepburn is out of shot.

www.cbs.com/shows/grammys/photos/1003394/2015-grammy-rehearsals/73963/i-can-t-even-pick-a-favorite
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Photographs have emerged overnight from behind the scenes at the preparations for the 57th Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday 8th February showing what can only be described as an almighty gaffe by organizers with promotional photographs and seat reservations for ELO and Electric Light Orchestra actually showing The Orchestra [former members of ELO & ELO Part II].
www.gannett-cdn.com
Sam Smith will be seated near "Stay With Me" co-writer Jeff Lynne ...
It's perhaps ironic that after years of error strewn promotion of Phil BatesELO Part II and The Orchestra as ELO that photos of The Orchestra are labelled as ELO at one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the calendar, commonly as known as the Oscars of the music world. One can only hope that this unfortunate error will be corrected in time for the show.

REVIEW: FAN FAN FAN/THE WORST OF [Baby Scream]

This new Baby Scream twin release is literally 2 for the price of 1 ... in CD format!
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! When an artiste decides to release two [2] albums at once totally nearly forty [4] tracks, any album review is going to struggle to convey the range and content therein. But "Fan, Fan, Fan" and "The Worst Of ...", newly self-published efforts from Baby Scream supremo Juan Pablo Mazzola carry on where his 2013 effort "Greatest Failures" left off and are both crammed with guitar driven Power Pop jewels heavily influenced by the likes of, primarily, John Lennon and Marc Bolan yet with such a variety of musical styles that you are left quite impressed after just one play [each!] all the way through.

Both albums feature rock 'n' roll blasters, the odd ballad and even surprising covers. If "Fan, Fan, Fan" is a classy and original acoustic themed affair from beginning to end [highlighted for me by the Bowiesque "A Human Being On Mars"], then "The Worst Of ..." should really be termed "The Rest Of ..." with an eclectic mix of originals and re-interpretations plus a dab of The Beatles and Scooby Doo added in for good measure! Best to discover both or either of these for yourself me thinx! [8/10]

"Fan, Fan, Fan" comprises: [1] "Everybody Sucks" [1:34]; [2] "Back To Douche" [2:56]; [3] "Loner" [2:34]; [4] "Cheap Perfume" [2:00]; [5] "A Human Being On Mars" [2:24]; [6] "Captain Hook" [2:31]; [7] "Haters Will Hate" [2:55]; [8] "Just For A While" [2:36]; [9] "The Girl Next Door" [4:25]; [10] "The Kitty Song" [2:37]; [11] "I Don't Wanna Wake Up From This Dream" [2:39]; [12] "Blue In Berlin [1:48]
Juan Pablo Mazzola is the man behind Baby Scream ...
 "The Worst Of ..." comprises: [1] "Mistake" [0:01]; [2] "Pieces Of Me" [2:00]; [3] "Unicorns" [2:17]; [4] "As Long As It Hurts [I'm Fine]" [2:56]; [5] "Shooting Stars" [3:33]; [6] "My Very Last Mistake" [3:49]; [7] "This F***ed Up World" [2:25]; [8] "Overdosed" [2:57]; [9] "Car [Upon The Stars]" [4:06]; [10] "Politicians R Bullies" [2:16]; [11] "In A Picture" [3:07]; [12] "Wake Up Call" [3:05]; [13] "The Sounds Of Clacks" [2:31]; [14] "Tear After Tear" [2:02]; [15] "Words Like Knives" [3:30]; [16] "Sparks" [2:00]; [17] "Sparks [Acoustic]" [2:00]; [18] "My New Dope" [2:45]; [19] "Beers And Public Buildings" [2:51]; [20] "Xmas Tree [All Pain Is Left Behind]" [2:57]; [21] "Ice Cream Man Theme Song"[1:59]; [22] "Flirting With Disaster"/"Beatles Medley" [4:33]; [23] "20th Century Baby" [2:24]; [24] "The Concept" [3:54]; "I'll Be There For You" [2:59]; [26] "Cruella De Vil" [1:33]; [27] "Theme from Scooby Doo" [2:05]

SONY SURPRISE: ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN [OrKestra]

From All At Once to an Epic moment ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! If we discount the recent mega-merges between such former heavyweight labels as Sony, BMG, Warner, Universal and EMI, there have been relatively few instances where there have been albums released on the same record label by both ELO and its offshoots ELO Part II, OrKestra and The Orchestra.

The only examples that came to mind were [a] the Telstar releases of "The Very Best Of The Electric Light Orchestra" [1989] and "Electric Light Orchestra Part Two" [1991]; [b] the Dino releases of OrKestra's "Beyond The Dream" [1991] and "The Very Best Of The Electric Light Orchestra" [1994] and [c] the Disky budget compilations of EMI's early ELO catalogue [1996] and their re-issue of ELO Part II's "One Night - Live In Australia" 2CD set [1999].
For 'Croucutt' please read 'Groucutt' ...
But last week, Yours Truly KJS stumbled across the ultimate example of an common label co-issue on eBay"Roll Over Beethoven" by OrKestra [the post-ELO vehicle of Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminski] was originally released in 1993 via All At Once Records [#AAO9082] featuring a significant portion of tracks from their debut album "Beyond The Dream" [1991].

I was surprised to learn that Sony BMG had re-issued "Roll Over Beethoven" [#82796942778] on their Epic label in 2007 with new packaging complete with bar code, an alternative sleeve colour and the rather unfortunate misspelling of 'Groucutt' as 'Croucutt'! You may recall that Epic were, of course, the official label of ELO & Jeff Lynne from 1985 up until 2012.
OrKestra and ELO shared the same 'Legacy' back in 2007 ...
The above release gives us the strongest - if not the rarest - of connections between ELO and one of its closest musical relatives OrKestra. For me it was, quite literally, a most exciting "Discovery"!

NOTE: I have since been advised that this is a counterfeit Russian release from 2013/2014. The catalogue number is the same as the 2007 "Balance Of Power" expanded issue! I have not deleted this article to show you that I am not infallible and that no-one is immune from being "Caught In A Trap"!
