RECOMMENDED: DAVID MYHR: LIVE IN CONCERT

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Yours Truly KJS just had to post this fantastic footage of a concert by ELOBF recommended artiste David Myhr from a concert held in his Swedish home town PiteĆ„ back on Thursday 28th July 2011 where he performed songs in advance of his superb debut album "Soundshine". I truly hope that this gig finds its way onto DVD in the very near future. David visited London to support the much loved and mighty Pugwash earlier this year. We crossed each others paths after David saw the ELOBF review of that Pugwash gig. I later reviewed: "Soundshine" for ELOBF and also interviewed David thus:

And the rest, they say, is history. I'm pretty sure that many ELO and/or Beatles fan will enjoy the above performance. ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommends "Soundshine" by David Myhr to those enlightened folks who enjoy the music of ELOJeff LynneRoy WoodThe MoveThe Idle Race'Brum Beat'The Beatles and related artistes.

NEW JOE WALSH PROMO VIDEO: ONE DAY AT A TIME

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! I like Joe Walsh. I like his music and I like his message of recovery from the very, very dark place of alcohol and drug abuse. One of the best tracks on Joe's latest stu dioalbum "Analog Man" is "One Day At A Time" and, as it is his new single, a new music video has been released to accompany it [see above]. Here are the words of Joe himself regarding the song:

"This song is about my path out of the darkness of drug addiction and alcoholism. The message is that there is a way out and a new life waiting in recovery that is good. The first step is to ask for help. The included links are a good place to start. I'm doing this because if it helps one person - it was worth it. It's by giving back that we receive and I am eternally grateful for my sobriety and my life today."
"One Day At A Time" is one of the tracks that is produced by Jeff Lynne on the album, as is wholly evident upon listening to it. The video is excellent and, also, further demonstrates those strong bonds between ELO and The Beatles in that it also features Ringo Starr and Jeff Lynne.

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommends both "One Day At A Time" and "Analog Man" by Joe Walsh to those enlightened folks who enjoy the music of ELOJeff LynneRoy WoodThe MoveThe Idle Race'Brum Beat'The Beatles and related artistes.

RECOMMENDED: DRAGONFLY [Maxi Dunn]

"Dragonfly" is taken from the forthcoming Maxi Dunn LP "Edmund & Leo" ...
Hello... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! One of the artistes that ELOBF supports is Liverpool based songstress Maxi Dunn. You may recall this article I published back in December 2011 wherein I reviewed her first two [2] albums "Welcome To Soonville" and "The Neglected Gambit" - which were largely produced by Peter Hackett alias Cult of Wedge.

Maxi is releasing her third album in February 2013 - entitled "Edmund and Leo" - and, based on the superlative first three [3] tracks already released: "Watching The Stars""Dragonfly" [see below] and now "Change The Record", it promises to be a real release highlight for 2013.
Indeed, Yours Truly KJS hopes to interview both Maxi and Peter, whilst also reviewing her new album nearer the time. So while we await that, why not have a listen to "Dragonfly" and check out the fantastic music at Maxi Dunn and/or Maxi Dunn [YouTube]?

JEFF LYNNE: MERCY MERCY PROMO VIDEO + REVIEWS

Hello... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! It looks as if the lead singles for the new Jeff Lynne album "Long Wave" in the USA and UK will be "Mercy Mercy" [USA] and "At Last" [UK] respectively, judging from the airplay and reviews out there that are starting to spread out over the airwaves and internet.

And over in the States, Rolling Stone have just published exclusively the first new Jeff Lynne promo music video for over two [2] decades for "Mercy Mercy" - which reminds me a little of the 1980 music video for "Coming Up" by Paul McCartney. Add to that the increasing number of positive reviews for both the lead singles and it looks like the ELO & Jeff Lynne media machine is ramping up nicely for those twin album releases.

A four [4] page feature including a double page picture of Jeff Lynne and ELO is also due for publication in the November 2012 issue of MOJO magazine!

WHEN ELO MET BOLAN

Hello... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! September 16th is not only a significant date for me on a personal level, this year it marks the 35th anniversary of another of my musical heroes: Marc Bolan. I am very grateful that my friend Peter Hackett from Cult of Wedge alerted me to a nice article in the latest edition of The Sunday Mercury. In the above article, Bev Bevan writes fondly about that legendary coming together of ELO and Marc Bolan both at Air Studios and later on stage at Watford Town Hall @ Tuesday 10th April 1974 thus:
"It's not widely known but Marc Bolan once joined ELO! We'd been friends with Marc since the early days of Tyrannosaurus Rex, with whom we'd appeared at a number of gigs - but a chance encounter in the recording studio led to something more. We were at AIR [Studios] London, putting down some new tracks for an album ["On The Third Day"], and who should walk in but Marc, who had been recording there earlier in the day. After we exchanged pleasantries we got down to work with Marc joining us and we completed a couple of tracks. Listen to the single version of "Ma Ma Ma Belle" and it's Marc playing twin lead guitar with Jeff Lynne. We thought he was kidding but one night in Watford, he turned up with his guitar and jammed with us on "Roll Over Beethoven". It was surprise for everyone and we felt a bit sorry for him when he first came on stage. Our audiences were quite 'heavy' and with Marc's pop image he came in for a bit of stick from some of the folk there, but he soon won them over and we all enjoyed ourselves. The song that night lasted around 15 minutes, much to the delight of the fans!"

Yours Truly KJS also posted this article two [2] years ago on the 33rd anniversary of the death of Marc, noting also that he featured on more than one song recorded during the OTTD sessions:

EVERYONE'S BORN TO DIE

It was ironic that Marc died in the year that ELO had begun to reach the same levels of success with "Out Of The Blue" that he achieved in those early seventies years when ELO were largely unknown and Marc was [and still is] an iconic Superstar.

SHOWDOWN: ANOTHER JEFF LYNNE ALBUM DUE IN 2013?

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! My good friend and ELO gig buddy Christian 'Poker' Evans has alerted Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] to this interesting news via the Showdown mailing list, posted earlier today thus:

"There's a rumour that there are actually three [3] new albums in the works ... "Long Wave" and "Mr. Blue Sky" due out next month, and another album of new songs coming out in 2013. Eight [8] tracks finished so far. Who started this rumour? Jeff did! [On] Wednesday night at the debut screening of "Mr. Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne and ELO" at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles!"

With the twin releases in October to look forward to together with the much anticipated "Armchair Theatre" and "Zoom" expanded editions, an "ELO Live" album plus a possible follow-up to "Long Wave" and now an album of Jeff Lynne original compositions, the next year [or whenever] looks like being the busiest for the ELO maestro since "When Time Stood Still"! REVIEW: ABOVE THE BLUE [Vegas With Randolph]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Another independent and talented band who feature both on my Friday radio show and on Hamilton Radio in general are Vegas With Randolph [VWR]. The DC based band sent their latest [2011] release "Above The Blue" over the pond last month for Yours Truly KJS to listen to and review accordingly.

And what [at first listen] appears to be a great if not manic fusion of guitar driven American Power Pop gives way to some wonderfully constructed songs and superb studio work. After the second and third listens, Yours Truly KJS was happily driving around tapping my fingers to this most excellent album that pleasingly also features guest appearances by fellow ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] featured artistes Maxi Dunn and Vinnie Zummo too.

"Above The Blue" comprises: [1] "The Better Part"; [2] "Above The Blue"; [3] "Some Time To Live"; [4] "Supergirl"; [5] "A Lesser Fool"; [6] "She Does It For Me"; [7] "Summertime"; [8] "Marisa"; [9] "Lagavulin For Christmas"; [10] "The Tree Song"; [11] Double Play: "End Of The Party"; [12] Double Play: "Since You're Not Around"; [13] Double Play: "Alone"; [14] Double Play: "Wondering"; [15] Double Play: "Even Though"; [16] Double Play: "Light Of Day"; [17] "Above The Blue [Reprise]"; [18] "The Sippy Cup Song"

I like the catchy "A Lesser Fool" [featuring the wonderful Maxi Dunn on vocals], the ballad "The Tree Song", the anthem that is "Even Though" and the rousing "Light Of Day". Add to that the string laden reprise of the title track and you have an attractive and highly enjoyable album to savour!

Vegas With Randolph are: John Ratts; Eric Kern; Dan Aylestock; Dave Purol and Brock Harris. Check out the band and their biography via their official web site at: vegaswithrandolph.com. You can also order "Above The Blue" from the VWR official web site and/or download it via amazon.com thus:

REVIEW: ON THE GREEN SEVENTY SEEN [Cult of Wedge]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! You may recall that ELOBF reviewed an album entitled "Tape Recorders Changed Everything" by local ELO fan and multi-talented songwriter and musician Peter Hackett - alias Cult of Wedge - last November.

I'm pleased to announce that Cult of Wedge [CoW] have just released their latest album entitled "On The Green Seventy Seen" and what an impressive new collection of innovative and enjoyable songs it is! Whilst my world view seemingly differs from that of CoW, this album oozes class with clever lyrical guile and infectious tunes intermingled with an expansive demonstration of musical prowess. Indeed, the quirky nature and sense of Peter Hackett is evidenced also by the fact that at the last count there are at least six [6] different album covers to choose from [see above!].

Tracks: [1] "Mother Natures Kids" (4:18); [2] "1977" (4:06); [3] "Misunderstood Master Of The Universe" (4:53); [4] "On The Green Seventy Seen" (5:05); [5] "The Girl From N.A.S.A." (4:04); [6] "Back To The Caveman" (3:02); [7] "Heads Are Rolling" (3:30); [8] "Glory For Me" (5:04); [9] "Super Duper Sunshine Man" (3:53); [10] "The Trouble With Armageddon" (3:24)

Whilst "1977" affectionately wants to return to the dizzy days of the Silver Jubilee - with a mention for ELO's "Out Of The Blue" in there naturally! - and "The Girl From N.A.S.A." lyrically being the twin sister of ELO's "Yours Truly 2095" plus a big nod to Pink Floyd with the mellow "Glory For Me", the whole album instantly becomes cult listening material literally after a couple of plays. I have to say that the title track really is worthy of the adjective "awesome" too.

"On The Green Seventy Seen" for me is not so an improvement upon "Tape Recorders Changed Everything" as a graduation into a musical and lyrical position worthy of a much wider audience and critical acclaim or - in other words - the backing of a strong, supportive record label.

The beauty of this release is that you can download the whole album [in absolutely any format!] for the princely sum of just £3.50 and its predecessor for just £3.00 thus:

CAUGHT LIVE: THE COHEN BROTHERS

Hello... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! When keyboardist and vocalist Julian Crook bounded onto the stage for his debut gig with Bev Bevan, Trevor Burton and The Move [in place of a busy Neil Lockwood] at the Brewood Music Festival back in July, I was indeed impressed with his versatility and performance. Hence it was only natural to touch base with Julian and investigate his own ongoing musical project The Cohen Brothers too!
And that I did on the night of Friday 7th September at the fantastic Queen's Head in cosy Wolverley when Yours Truly KJS travelled the 20 odd miles south to catch the band in concert. The Cohen Brothers - who are Julian Crook [Keyboards/Vocals], David Smaylen [Drums], Peter Cottom [Percussion/Effects], Sean Griffin [Guitars/Harmonica] and Brian Richards [Bass] - produced a performance par excellence at a packed venue in front of an enthusiastic and appreciative audience which included fellow Move member Phil Tree and Trevor Burton Band bassist Pez Connor.
This five [5] piece outfit - strongly influenced by Steve Winwood, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Santana -  delivered two [2] sets of their own compositions intertwined with classics including the likes of "Little Wing""This Is Life" [the title track from their latest album], "Can't Find My Way Home""Moving On""Black Magic Woman""Memphis Without Elvis""Do It Right" and "Gimme Some Loving" [naturally!] - amongst not a few others.
KJS plus The Cohen Brothers ...
The band sound great producing a superb bluesy jazzy set of songs that would grace the stage of much larger venues yet sounded very much at home in this intimate setting. And you can find out what those Cohen Brothers are up to for yourselves by checking out their excellent web site thus:

COMING SOON: BGO II

Hello... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Besides all the hectic activity with those new ELO and Jeff Lynne albums, one of the other new release highlights later in 2012 will be the second Bubble Gum Orchestra album entitled "BGO II" - conceived, written, performed, recorded, produced and to be released by Michael Laine Hildebrandt.

ELOBF has been in frequent contact with MLH and BGO during 2011 and 2012 as the new album has developed and I have even been privy to a couple of those new ten [10] tracks. All I can say at this point is that "BGO II" will be a worthy successor to "Out Of This World":

The new album - replete with a Prologue and Epilogue - will feature these trax:
"Prologue"; [1] "Today Is Beautiful"; [2] "Loving On Another"; [3] "Distant Song"; [4] "Blowin' Away" [featuring Steve Howard]; [5] "Cloud 9 [When We Were Young"]; [6] "To You From Me"; [7] "Carrie In My Dreams"; ["Movements In A Major"]; [8] "Oh Can We Save It"; [9] "Symphony Of Sorrow"; [10] "A Trillion To One"; "Epilogue"
This will be another album well worth the anticipation when it arrives. Stay tuned to ELOBF for worldwide "BGO II" release and purchase information.

Hello... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again!
